Walden Capital hosted a wonderful Women and Wealth event recently full of conversation and lovely food courtesy of the Goat & Grass. Tapas and cocktails makes any gathering more convivial, and what better way to discuss how we women can uplift ourselves in this man’s world?, still true even though in the UK at least over half the wealth by value is now held by women.
We would like to give a huge thank you to our sporting ambassador, up and coming professional golfer, Rebecca Earl. It was fascinating to hear from Rebecca about the relative equity within the golfing world and the challenges women face in seeking equality. Rebecca, you shocked us with the difference in value of prize pots between events for men and women, a genuine surprise that in the modern world the differential can still be 20 times as much for men as for women. Clearly change is still needed!
However, as a Wealth Manager, our ability to influence golf is limited, and we invited our very own advisors Mikki Gant and John Stirling to speak about their own experiences within the industry. If you know John, you’ll be aware that he isn’t technically a lady, so you may be wondering why we invited him into our safe space. In an attempt to help John understand how it feels to be in the minority, we asked how it feels being the only man in a room full of women? His answer, unsurprisingly for those who know him, was ‘absolutely fine’.
The event was compered by Mikki, who did an excellent job of bringing us all together, keeping us to timings, as well as providing some worrying facts and figures about how few client facing financial services staff are women, and even fewer senior finance professionals, despite also giving us the fascinating nugget that not only do women control the majority of wealth in the United Kingdom, but are projected to increase their influence in the coming decades, until by 2050 almost two thirds of UK wealth will be held by women.
Overall, we had a great evening, we didn’t drink the bar dry, it was after all, a work night – but it was fun, inspirational, and quite clearly the women at our event are not going to accept being treated as second class citizens by anyone, thank you all for attending.
Keep an eye out for more events to come!
